Do You Need Perfect Credit to Get a Mortgage?
October 7, 2026
Plenty of would-be buyers assume a flawless credit score is the price of admission to homeownership. It is not. Lenders approve loans every day for borrowers with scores well short of perfect, and the real question is how the whole file looks. With rates still elevated, though, credit matters more than ever, so it pays to understand where you stand.
Lenders look at credit as one piece of a larger picture. They weigh your payment history, how much of your available credit you use, the age of your accounts, and any recent collections or late payments. Income, job stability, savings, and the size of your down payment all carry real weight too. A borrower with a modest score and a solid cash reserve can look stronger on paper than someone with a high score and stretched finances.
